Some people walk into one of those little country stores while on vacation somewhere between Oklahoma and Colorado, or Texas and Arizona, or anywhere in between and see all those cutesy little things being offered for sale and think, "Oh I like that - wish my house would look like that" or they go on vacation at a Dude ranch or resort and marvel at the hair on hide leather furniture and pillows with wall decor of steer heads and wish they could live there forever.  Just what is so appealing? is it the decor or the atmosphere that the decor creates?  is it the people that live there or work there that we wish we could be like?  Often the visit is a get-away from an apartment or home in some other part of the country and after our visit we want to re-create that atmosphere in our own living spaces because it struck a chord with our inner souls.  To others, it's just the way we have always lived.

Personally, this is a 'lifestyle' because I have lived in Texas and Oklahoma, own horses, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, and cats and it's just the way life IS.  From early on and until this day, my soul just 'relates' to the lure of the Native American way of life, the cowboys on the open prairie, and the smell of the fresh air mixed with the smell of sage, campfires, and horse manure.  My mind drifts back to a time in days gone by when life was maybe harder physically, but simpler.  True, technology is great but it has caused all of us to become over-stressed with the demand on our time that this new fangled technology requires.

Can anyone remember what it's like to just sit back at the end of the day on the front porch and let the body rest after working outside all day?  Getting up at the crack of dawn to care for the animals, making an early breakfast (the most important meal of the day), and listening to the crickets as the sun was going down across the western sky in colors of red, gold, orange, and navy blue?  When's the last time any of us really looked up and the sky and saw the bright beautiful stars? (not counting the satellites and other communication devices flying around up there to give us all this neat new technology).  Yes, life was simpler and perhaps the best we can do today is create a haven within our own four walls we call 'home,' be it an apartment, a rental home, or a 5,000 square foot castle - it's our space and we can turn the inside into anything we want!  We don't even have to match it to the outside if we don't want to (remember it's what's on the 'inside' that counts?).

So if you find solace in the Western or Southwestern lifestyle, and you want to create your space into a matching decor theme - you don't need a million dollars... start small and add one thing at a time until you perfect your rooms and they make you happy!  The end result will reflect your inner soul.
